I’m Professor Mohamed Hemaidia, holder of a PhD degree in linguistics and phonetics of English from Oran University 2, Ahmed Ben Ahmed, Algeria. After having spent 23 years teaching at middle and secondary schools, respectively, I got my Magister degree and assumed a teaching job at a university in 2008, where I've taught different subjects so far, such as phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, oral expression, and cultural eras at the department of letters and languages at Ibn Khaldoun University of Tiaret. My main areas of research interest are linguistics, in general, and sociolinguistics, in particular. The areas of phonetics and phonology have been integrated as important subjects in the study of people’s speech inside the Algerian speech community, as well as the British local accents from north to south and east to west. My research interest also tends towards comparing Arabic and English languages and cultures to predict and explain the problems learners face in learning the English language. This comparison may include the two languages' grammatical, phonological, vocabulary, and cultural systems to deal with the big influence the native language can exert on the target language. I am also interested in translating scientific and literary terms from Arabic and French into English, and vice versa. This is to develop scientific research in all disciplines and benefit from the sciences written and documented in these languages.

Linguistics and its branches

Linguistics

icon

is the scientific study of any language, including its structure, meaning, and usage of words in contexts. Linguists' works turn around the analysis of language components such as phonetics, phonology, syntax, lexis, semantics, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics to understand the difficulties related to linguistic communication and its cultural implications.

Grammar

icon

is the sub-branch of linguistics which refers to a set of systematic rules and conventions that dictate the structure and usage of a language and guide correct spoken and written language. It includes syntax, which governs the combinations of words in a sentence; morphology, which deals with the formation of words, namely inflections and derivations of words; and semantics, which is responsible for the meaning conveyed by words. These rules provide a framework for linguistic communication, thereby ensuring clarity, coherence, and shared understanding within a language community.

Phonetics

icon

is a sub-branch of linguistics that studies the physical and acoustic aspects of human speech sounds. It studies how sounds are produced, transmitted, and perceived by the inner ear and the brain, aiming to comprehend the fundamental units of speech of any language. Phonetics can guide people to improve their pronunciation and gain mutual intelligibility.

Semantics

icon

is concerned with the study of meaning in a particular language, including interpreting and understanding words, phrases, and sentences. Effective communication depends on semantics, as it determines the intended meaning behind linguistic expressions by exploring how language conveys meaning through symbols and concepts.

Pragmatics

icon

is the study of language use in different social contexts, focusing on how speakers convey meaning. It explores the impact of context, cultural norms, and shared knowledge on communication, going beyond the literal meaning of words to understand implied meanings, intentions, and the social functions of language. Pragmatics is essential for indirect communication in everyday interactions.

Lexis

icon

is the vocabulary of a language, or set of words, along with their definitions and contextual usage. Lexis studies words in a particular language, including their structure, meaning, and usage. It includes all of the words and phrases that make up a language.
